Neurodivergent Sleep Support

Sleep is never just about sleep.

For neurodivergent people, rest is influenced by so many interconnected factors — nervous system regulation, sensory needs, circadian rhythms, emotional wellbeing, environment, stress, connection, and the unique way each person experiences the world.

My approach is gentle, holistic, and evidence-informed. I don’t use sleep training, rigid schedules, or one-size-fits-all solutions. Instead, we explore what may be influencing sleep and create supportive changes that work with your family’s needs, values, and capacity.

I support neurodivergent children, teens, and adults, with a particular interest in supporting neurodivergent mothers navigating burnout, hormonal changes, and sleep disruption during perimenopause and menopause.

A deeper look at what is influencing sleep

Sleep struggles rarely exist in isolation.

Whether you’re supporting a child who finds sleep difficult, a teenager with a shifted sleep pattern, or navigating your own disrupted sleep as a neurodivergent adult, there are often many interconnected factors at play.

This comprehensive consultation is designed to move beyond generic sleep advice and explore the unique combination of nervous system regulation, sensory needs, circadian rhythms, environment, wellbeing, and daily life that influences rest.

Before we meet, you’ll complete a detailed intake form and sleep history so I can understand the bigger picture — including developmental history, temperament, neurodivergence, sensory preferences, current rhythms, environment, stressors, and any factors that may be impacting sleep.

During our session, we’ll gently explore patterns, challenges, and observations, connecting the dots together to create a clearer understanding of what may be contributing to sleep difficulties.

You’ll leave with:

✔ A deeper understanding of the factors influencing sleep
✔ Personalised, neuro-affirming recommendations tailored to your situation
✔ Practical strategies that fit your family, your capacity, and your values
✔ A summary of key observations and suggested next steps
✔ Guidance around when additional support or referrals may be helpful

Together, we may explore:

✔ Nervous system regulation and sensory processing
✔ Circadian rhythm, sleep timing, and sleep pressure
✔ Sleep environment and sensory comfort
✔ Emotional wellbeing, stress, and co-regulation
✔ Daily rhythms, transitions, and family capacity
✔ Nutrition, health factors, and possible contributors to disrupted sleep
✔ Signs that further assessment or professional support may be beneficial

For children and teens

I support families to understand sleep through a neuro-affirming lens, recognising that autistic, ADHD, and otherwise neurodivergent children and teens may experience sleep differently due to differences in sensory processing, regulation, anxiety, routines, and circadian rhythms.

The goal is not to force a child into a particular sleep pattern, but to understand what their body and brain may be communicating and find supportive approaches that work for them.

For neurodivergent adults and mums

Sleep can become particularly complex for neurodivergent parents, especially during periods of hormonal change, burnout, and increased life demands.

I have a particular interest in supporting neurodivergent parents and caregivers navigating perimenopause and menopause, where changes in hormones can interact with ADHD/autistic traits, sensory sensitivity, stress, and nervous system regulation.

Together, we explore realistic ways to better understand and support your sleep — without adding another impossible list of things to do.

When sleep support needs a practical approach

If you feel your family would benefit from more hands-on support, I can also work with you in your home to explore things like:

✔ Creating a calmer, more supportive bedroom environment
✔ Understanding sensory needs and reducing overwhelm
✔ Organising spaces to make daily life easier
✔ Creating realistic family rhythms and systems
✔ Reducing the practical load that contributes to exhaustion

Parent testimonial

Our daughter is a high energy, low sleep need child. She doesn’t sleep consistently and we went through all of the sleep regressions…

After 3 years of sleep deprivation, I reached out to Kara of Nurtured Foundations for help and guidance.

Kara has a kind and gentle approach that looks at the whole picture.

After establishing the sleep issues including late bedtime, night wakings, occasional night terrors, and early wake ups we discussed our daughters nap times, bedtime routine, diet and daily activities as well as her emotions. I didn’t realise that all of these factors affect sleep.

Kara listened and wasn’t judgemental about anything we had done or tried to help our daughter sleep.

She acknowledged that we were doing a great job which was a relief to hear. Kara encouraged us to continue on as we are and advised of other things we could implement to help our daughter sleep. After a couple of weeks we’ve noticed a great improvement, the night wakings are less frequent and her bedtime is now earlier. There have even been a couple of nights where she has slept through!

We will continue implementing the tools Kara has given us as I’m confident our daughter's sleep will continue to improve.

Kara is wonderful, she is very caring and will help you in any way she can. I highly recommend Nurtured Foundations’.

‘I think the best thing about your approach is that it gave me permission to trust myself and what I was doing for Maya as an individual little human that has her own needs for me to respond to.

As a first-time mum faced with so much advice and information that conflicts with my natural instinct to nurture my baby, I can’t tell you how beneficial this is.
